Writing music is like playing ping pong…every time you think you hit a good shot, put down a great verse or chorus, the challenge to move forward comes right back to you without hesitation.  And there I sit, with a blank canvas, wondering where in the world I’m supposed to take the next phrase in the melody.

When it works, it really works.  The phrasing comes easy and the notes just seem to write themselves.  And then, there are the times when it doesn’t work.  Or, I think I’ve written something great, and then I hear it and slam on the brakes.

In the studio yesterday, we were listening to a recent song that included my piano track, percussion and some guitar….we were all set to record vocals but my gut told me to stop and not record.  The lyrics seemed wrong, the music was lacking, in something.  I can’t put my finger on it yet, but the song did not impress me or inspire me.  Got to shelve that one for a while.

As frustrating as that can be, it’s all part of the process.
